Welcome Back to School!
I am excited to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year! Hopefully, the summer has provided you with memorable opportunities to spend quality time with family and friends. It continues to be an honor and privilege to serve as the principal of such a wonderful school and family!
Our summer has been busy. Access security is being installed throughout the entire school building. This will include interior and exterior cameras, card swipe access for school faculty and staff through all doors, and double buzz entry at main entrance with the Raptor System.
The Raptor System, which is used in many school districts including Council Rock, is a visitor management system. This system will better allow us to track visitors, volunteers, student late arrivals and early dismissals, and provide us with a more monitored environment for our students and staff. More details about these new procedures will be sent home soon.
New doors have been installed at the end of the first and second floor hallways. All classrooms will have secured latches on the doors for lockdowns, and fire extinguishers have been ordered for each classroom for extra security.
Carpets continue to be replaced with tile in several classrooms, our PreK-4 classrooms have been freshly painted, and cubbies have been installed in our Kindergarten classrooms. Our Media Center has a new look with a few murals painted on the walls and our new Epic Lego Wall. Our “mission in the flesh” has been updated with canvas prints of our students throughout the school building and inspirational quotes and reminders are posted throughout our school building.
Our custodial staff and Mrs. Engle have been working hard preparing the school building. As always, our teachers have been very busy continuing their education by attending professional development classes along with working hard in preparing their classrooms.
I am sad to announce that we will be saying farewell to our dedicated facility manager, Mrs. Tina Engle. After much reflection, Mrs. Engle assumed a new position and role. While we are very sad that she is leaving and so grateful for the spirit and dedication she has brought to Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic School,
we support her desire to move into this new role. We also wish Mr. Colin Durnin the best of luck as he begins his Master’s program and hope he will join our faculty in the near future.
As we welcome our new families to our SKD community, please also join me in also welcoming our new members to our faculty- Mrs. Stacey Desmond who will join our 1st grade team, Ms. Elizabeth Menna who will join our 2nd grade team, and Mrs. Alyson Donahue who will join our 4th grade team. I am still in the process of hiring our PreK 4 Teacher. As soon as he/she is hired, you will be notified.
The 2018-2019 school year will be another exciting and productive school year with many memorable experiences and happenings:
● We anxiously wait for the official National Blue Ribbon School announcement and hope to be included among the top schools in the country. This is scheduled to be announced in early September.
● New laptops have arrived for each teacher.
● We will continue to expand our Robotics Teams and plan on forming a school Forensics Team.
● We will host a High School Night for upper grade students and their parents.
● We will continue to expand our after-school clubs and activities.
● We look forward to our continued partnership with Holy Family University.
● New Social Studies text books have been ordered for grades 7 and 8 that are up-to-date and aligned with National Curriculum Standards.
● We will plan to implement an outdoor learning environment in the near future.
SKD will open its doors for students in Grades 1-8 on Wednesday, September 5th. School begins promptly at 8:15am each day. Please know that a great deal of time, effort, and thought has gone into the process of student placement for the 2018-2019 school year. Careful consideration was given to input from staff and
families as well as student learning styles. Classrooms have been balanced academically and socially. Our class lists are structured to provide equitable class sizes at each grade level. All of our teachers work hard to make school a positive experience for all of our students. Please understand that it can take a few weeks
for your child to acclimate to a new grade, peer group, and teacher.
I certainly look forward to seeing all of you! Enjoy these remaining days of summer as we eagerly anticipate another fulfilling year! As always, I thank you for your commitment to Catholic education, Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic School, and our mission!
The Mission of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic School is to form Catholic leaders through academic excellence, personal discipline, and Christian service.
